06年中国注册学生达到9万多[澳洲留学]

澳大利亚2006年发表的官方数据显示，澳大利亚中国注册学生为9万多人，是澳大利亚所有国际留学生最多的国家，占所有国际留学生10.5%。

International student numbers continue to grow

20 February 2007

The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today welcomed new data that shows total enrolments for 2006 increased by 11% with over 380,000 international student enrolments.

“It is critical for Australia to have strong educational linkages abroad to sustain Australia’s future economic and social development,” Minister Bishop said.

Asia remains Australia’s main source of international students, representing more than three quarters of international enrolments. The highest growth continues to come from India (42% between 2005 and 2006), the Republic of Korea (19%) and China (10%).

The majority of enrolments were in the higher education sector, growing 5% on the previous year, but the largest growth was seen in the vocational education and training sector, with a 26% increase in enrolments.

International education contributed $10.1 billion last financial year, to the Australian economy, making it Australia’s fourth largest export industry, behind coal, iron ore, and tourism.

International education promotes and develops people-to-people links and underpins Australia’s foreign relations, national security, competitiveness in trade and skilled migration.

“This important export industry has made (and continues to make) a vital contribution to the Australian economy,” Minister Bishop said.

“Education is increasingly part of a global enterprise and many comparable countries are competing for international students, including the United Kingdom, Canada, United States and New Zealand. Australia continues to be a destination of choice for an increasing number of international students.

“Over the last decade international students have enriched Australian society and returned to their home with a strong understanding of Australia. They make an important contribution to their home countries in business, academia and government,” Minister Bishop said.
